Speaker 0 00:00:00 Okay, today we're talking about nine years on YouTube.
Speaker 1 00:00:04 What a journey.
Speaker 0 00:00:06 I dunno my days. Yeah, stick with us. There's honestly, there's pages and pages stuff. We're not gonna do pages and pages stuff today, are we? But we're just gonna share with you a little bit what it's like behind the scenes with a YouTube channel. So I'm Joe Cameron. He's Julian Miller. And we are from proper golfing. So we're based in the UK Ton Spa. But anyway, yeah, we're on YouTube. We are. And it told us we're nine years old.
Speaker 1 00:00:29 Nine years old. And apparently what in the top 10% of people keep going on YouTube? So we're nine is exactly true. Yeah. So we've got some dedication, but to be fair though,
Speaker 0 00:00:39 We're not actually like top in terms of subscriber apparently. Yeah, 10. We're the top 10% for keeping going Go us.
Speaker 1 00:00:45 Because it is a journey, isn't it? It's a job. It's
Speaker 0 00:00:48 A bit of a job, honestly. Where Start,
Speaker 1 00:00:49 And I actually haven't been on YouTube for nine years, Joe. I've been on for 13. Do
Speaker 0 00:00:53 You know we were just like a recapping between ourselves, you know, about nine years on YouTube and he's like, Ashley Joe. I started before that. I was like, oh yeah, you did.
Speaker 1 00:01:02 I did tell everybody
Speaker 0 00:01:03 Else's story though.
Speaker 1 00:01:04 So Warwick, which is the, the venue where we, we live, they did a film festival in the town center and people were able to put in videos and they were gonna be played on the town center and there's gonna be an overall winner. And in Warwick, there's a guy there called Jack Burns who won the open championship and there was a plaque at the venue where I used to coach at. So we did a story on Jack Burns. And what happened? Jeb?
Speaker 0 00:01:34 No, see it's hilarious. Really, because he reminded me, here's our, if you're just listening, we are podcasting on Spotify. So if you search proper golfing on Spotify, you'll find it. And you can see what I'm holding up now. But basically I'm holding up now. Hopefully the light isn't reflecting off it. The award, the actually won the award. Wouldn't the award a best film at the Warwick Rocks Film Festival in 2013 with this Robbie, what was his name?
Speaker 1 00:01:59 Jack Burns. Jack Burns.
Speaker 0 00:02:00 Jack Burns. So
Speaker 1 00:02:02 War, you've got Warwick's forgotten Sporting hero, isn't it? That's
Speaker 0 00:02:04 Right. So if you've got a bit of spare time, you can check it out because it's probably still, well I know it is definitely still there 2013, so it's been longer than that. Yeah. But oh yeah. I
Speaker 1 00:02:13 Don't years even know where to start. Years. How did it start Joe? How did it start for me?
Speaker 0 00:02:15 Well, yeah, I dunno. I'm honestly the, the nose here. Just tell it.
Speaker 1 00:02:19 Let's, so how did he start a happy accident, I think is how describe it. Initially, when I first went on, I was doing some trick shots, wasn't I? It was actually chipping a golf ball into the boot of my car. That
Speaker 0 00:02:31 Was after this, after
Speaker 1 00:02:32 2013. That was after that film festival. Now what I didn't really appreciate is how many takes it takes to actually pull the trick off. Yeah, my days and my car was pitted with ball strikes. But that did, so that was my first venture into, that's the, on YouTube, it's still on there. It's probably had about three views that that will be about it. Embarrassing. So it was a bit of fun at the time, but now how we became more well known on it. Yeah. Was was purely an accident. Yeah. So I was coaching a guy. So I was one of the lead coaches at, at the easy swing of which we've, you know, we've now moved away from for various reasons. But what happened is I was coaching a guy who had a, a poor memory and he said, would you mind making a video so that I can watch it back when I get back home?
Speaker 1 00:03:22 So I said, no problem at all. So I got my phone and I put it on the buggy, it's probably windy and bright, who knows? Oh, your cart on a cart. And I had about 50 goes making this video because I kept blobbing my words. Anyway, a lovely button on your phone, it's called a delete button. We use that a lot. That's cool. Popped that on there and made this video and it was seven minutes long and I didn't know how to get that video to him. And I kind of, the universe almost says, why don't you put it on YouTube then you can get a link and I could send in the link. So that's exactly what I did. Lo and behold, I said to Joe, I've put that on, I think it was the next day. Next day after something
Speaker 0 00:04:04 Like that. Yeah, it was literally the next day. Yeah.
Speaker 1 00:04:06 A thousand views, 10,000 views, 50,000 views. That one's had nearly a million views
Speaker 0 00:04:12 Literally. And that is the absolute truth. It's like, Joe, you know that video that I just did for that chap to give him the link, he came back his eye, it has had 10,000 views and then we thought, woo-hoo, we made it. So, but now YouTubers so we never really
Speaker 1 00:04:27 Do that. And that has been the most successful video I've ever put on YouTube as an accident. But do you know what? Do you know what, which is really
Speaker 0 00:04:35 Interesting when, when you say about delete button. Yeah, let's talk about this. Why you, I mean we've got, like I say, we've got nine years, but this is the very first one, right? Okay, what, so why were you DeLeT it?
Speaker 1 00:04:45 Honestly, wind tractors, mowers, airplanes, cloud, people talking to you, doing it wrong. Oh, how many, how many video? There must be 50 times more videos deleted than there are actually available to watch because of condition. What about the one for the book joke that I made at Nail It? So
Speaker 0 00:05:11 A nail it hall home, the par three where a British Par three where we do wool work with them is great. Yeah,
Speaker 1 00:05:16 Yeah. So I had to make some videos that you can look at in the book and you put your QR code on, it takes a video. I got there at five o'clock in the morning to get ahead of the game. Nobody out there nice bright day gonna be quiet. No, there's a farmer shooting pigeons or something in his field. So there's gunshots going off in the background. Oh, what? And you go, what does it take to make a quiet? Yeah,
Speaker 0 00:05:45 I'm just laughing about even when we used to do them overseas and like, so you'd be, you know, with your cameras and everything on the green or something and then people would go, woo woo.
Speaker 0 00:05:55 But I'll tell you what, say we're top 10% in terms of resilience. Okay. Keeping going and for putting content out regularly over those nine years. So I mean that's hats off to you and respect for you for doing that. I mean the, you know, so spin forward likes through lockdown where, you know, you were mostly doing the homeschooling, weren't you? So he was at home doing the homeschooling. Yeah, but the weekends when we were coming outta lockdown, we could start doing filming again. So I went off doing a pivot, didn't I? But you used to go right, okay, I'm gonna get up early in the early in the morning, I'm gonna go do some filming down at the Oxfordshire. So thank you very much for the Oxfordshire as well for that. But that's you. It's like
Speaker 1 00:06:33 An hour away, that's 65 miles each way. It's
Speaker 0 00:06:35 An hour away isn't So you'd be looking forward to doing some work at the weekend and then you get up early, get there and you ring me when you get to go, oh Joe, you're never gonna believe it. It was sunny in Leamington where we live, but an hour away, it's absolutely thrashing it down here. I can't do anything. I've gotta
Speaker 1 00:06:51 Come rain fog. I've even had snow. I'm sure there's some videos that have got snow in the background. So I've left Flemington where it's really nice driven 55 miles down the M 40 snow. I mean,
Speaker 0 00:07:05 What I know, but I mean, again, this is massive testimony to you is that you had to walk like literally with all your kit as well. So sometimes you'd actually get there and then because it was locked down, you know, the place was almost shut, wasn't it? But then you'd have to carry your kit, which might not sound a lot, but you've got the golf clubs to go in the thing. You've got all the camera and all the kit, you just have to walk. And then sometimes you would get that far. Yeah. And then they, then there'd be mowing the range.
Speaker 1 00:07:31 Honestly, you wouldn't believe how hard it is. You'd think a golf course is really quiet, wouldn't you? Oh, honestly, they are not quiet places. It's been when you need to make been videos. Yeah. But I mean we've been blessed. We've been able to go to lots of different Oh, that's
Speaker 0 00:07:43 What I was gonna say. I mean literally lots of
Speaker 1 00:07:44 Different places to create content. Literally
Speaker 0 00:07:46 Got a whole list of people here. I mean, you know, thanks to you guys on YouTube for subscribing and following us. I mean, most of our business since then has been built on YouTube. Yeah. So massive. Thank you. Thank you.
Speaker 1 00:07:57 To
Speaker 0 00:07:57 YouTube. Yeah, a hundred percent. And to you guys that have reached out, there's far too many to mention. And I mean there's like so many of our members that have, you know, been with us since the start. Eric, Tom, Matt, Bruce, Mike, Derek, Otto Barry, you know, endless amount of members for that. We, you know, ambassador Stuart Bernstein, who's a Yeah. Dick Stockton. Yeah, Dick Stockton, his wife Jamie. You know, they are absolutely endless. So it's, and I, we put out an email to our database the other day thanking everybody. I mean, one guy just emailed the other day and said, we watched so many golfers on YouTube and you're the best. So I'm like, no, that's very nice testament. But honestly, I know I've said it before, but massive testimony to you to keep going. Keep, 'cause you're that sort of person that you're gonna keep going. We haven't been on it for a year, really. Have we, we
Speaker 1 00:08:41 Took, we took time out to really coach people.
Speaker 0 00:08:46 Actually real people
Speaker 1 00:08:47 Have a lot of people coming in
Speaker 0 00:08:48 For coaching, coaching Academy. Yeah. Like real people.
Speaker 1 00:08:51 This is like the front bit of the studios just just behind you. So yeah, we've had a lot of people coming in for coaching, which is wonderful. And, and then what we found is just giving one off lessons isn't things. So we, we came up with our transformational program, which is amazing, isn't it? Yeah. I mean that's really changing. But
Speaker 0 00:09:09 The, the real answer is, is that we were getting so many golfers like you maybe that had watched YouTube videos on golf Yeah. And got completely confused. Okay. So we were like, hang on a minute, is that it's contributing to the confusion, you know, hints and tips and tricks. Yeah. Because the reality is, is that to get a massive following on YouTube, you've either gotta be really crazy entertaining or informal or just confuse people with another hint or tip, another hint or tick, you know, you've been there. So we literally had most of a year off, aren't we? And was experimenting and now who we've got some ideas about where we take our YouTube channels over the next nine years
Speaker 1 00:09:47 Mind. And we, so we've, you know, YouTube's great, but it is a job a hundred percent in itself and it's not always overly rewarded. Yeah. But you say that we've had people come from literally all over the world for coaching. That wouldn't have happened without you.
Speaker 0 00:10:04 You know what, I've, I've must absolutely mention the, or rip. Yeah, a hundred percent. Our two clients from Australia, so we're going back to before lockdown. They literally saw you on YouTube and he'd retired and, and his wife said, look, you've got to go and make the pilgrimage. She called us to see you, didn't she? Yeah. So she came to us and they came to us in Warwickshire and they literally stayed six weeks. If you watching, you know who you are. We absolutely love that story. We still love the pictures. But they came for six weeks and in 20 17, 20 18, you know, people were, people came from all over the world and we're hugely grateful to everybody that
Speaker 1 00:10:36 Came. And that definitely wouldn't have happened Hong Kong without being visible
Speaker 0 00:10:40 Hong Kong recently, aren't we? Dubai? Yeah.
Speaker 1 00:10:42 Hong Kong, Dubai, Spain, Portugal. Finland. A
Speaker 0 00:10:45 Hundred
Speaker 1 00:10:45 Percent. You know, America, that's
Speaker 0 00:10:48 Been crazy. Yeah. But, but yeah, actually, you know, if you'll follow golf on YouTube, there are lots of people out there. But we do have to mention like back in the early days, the the old copycat.
Speaker 1 00:10:57 Yeah. So, you know, we, we, we put the video out there made on the boogie of, of the Easy Swing. And because the Easy Swing got a lot of recognition on YouTube, other YouTubers were copying the information because it got them more views. And it was a very famous coach, I won't even mention his name, but a very famous coach on YouTube who literally did copy what we were saying. And he got a tremendous amount of, of views on there. But he wasn't really a disciple or an instructor of the easy swing. You've just shown easy swing method, which is absolutely fine. And you know, I, I had a, a fantastic time with the Easy Swing, but I knew there was things missing from my experience as a coach. I've coached for over 35 years. I've coached a lot of elite golfers, county teams, so on. So, so I knew a lot about coaching. The Easy Swing definitely changed my thinking. But people were saying, what else? Yeah, what else? What comes next? And there wasn't really a next for me. So that's why we kind of moved away and, and, but forever grateful for to Brian Sparks and, and the team, wonderful team of guys. I just chose to go down a different avenue because what we're doing now, it really is changing lives.
Speaker 0 00:12:15 I think you also need to take credit for the fact that, you know, when you were putting out those videos in the early days, they were doing cr they would, you know,
Speaker 1 00:12:22 Everybody benefited. Of course.
Speaker 0 00:12:23 A hundred percent. So don't benefited. Don't appreciate yourself for your part in that as well. 'cause people often ask the question. So anyway, yeah. Here we are in Royal Lemon Bar, just reflecting on nine years on YouTube. And we can't like, finish without mentioning some of the top contributors. They're just, I'm just gonna refer to my phone because Yeah, I took a picture of who they were in the middle of the night as you do and Gooey. I think it's opening. He's, I, he's one of our top contributors. He's always keeping us motivated. Yeah, there's load. I like Richard Adams is one of the top ones as well, which is awesome. Oh, cool. And Rick Rick, oh yeah. We won't say their full names, but the full names are on there. And Anthony Chadwick, his full name's on there as well. Oh, in Australia. Oh look, do you know, and again, you guys just keep us going, you know, like, because it has been, it has been tricky. You know, I think when we lost our way a little bit, we were here and we were doing hints and trips and, and it was really hard because we weren't being true to ourselves. You know, we wouldn't wanna just didn't wanna do that anymore. No, we didn't wanna do that anymore, did we?
Speaker 1 00:13:23 No. And
Speaker 1 00:13:26 You YouTube's a bit of a phenomenon really, because you are putting yourself out there Yeah. To be criticized. I don't think we get many critiques percent to be honest. Percent. Yeah. I would say 90% of our comments are pretty positive. At least percent. Yeah, a hundred percent. I like the fact that people challenge what we say and question what we say. What's wonderful now is we can also prove a lot of what we say. Yeah. Through, through technology. That's been a, a blessing being able to do extra things. And now we're also, we are training our own system to intelligently really help people improve. So there's, as a person we can remember so much. Yeah. Hundred percent. But sometimes technology can help us remember the things that we don't always think that have, have value. But we've, we've trained our system now and it's, we've pretty amazing to be honest. And
Speaker 0 00:14:21 What, what you've done with that is fantastic, isn't it? You know? So our, our people now come, you can look on the website, you come from a lesson or you come from a transformation session and you get like a recorded synopsis. It's literally like a, a bible that follows your session. Yeah. I mean if you come for, you know, if you wanna learn anything, you wanna be reminded of what you learn. And there's some stuff to take away and a summary of the session, especially in here, that's mind blowing what you do. I mean, I was showing a guy the other day, he was like, wow, that is amazing. Yeah. And it is amazing. So when, when you come and the, and the methodology that we use the measurement system. So say if you learn to drive, you need to know where you start from and where you're gonna end. That's exactly what we've done. Yeah, definitely. I mean de why would you not wanna do that? If you learn in a sport, you wanna know where you start and where you end. And one of my favorite objections for people is like, oh, I don't like online. Okay, you, the other celebration that we've gotta say is the hundred live Zoom masterclass. 100.
Speaker 1 00:15:15 Yeah. That's this Thursday coming, isn't it?
Speaker 0 00:15:17 Yeah. I mean that's, that, that again, that's testimony to you. Eight o'clock at night. We do them in the uk. Yeah. And I've, I said to him, you know, you need to bring it forward. He is like, no, no, no, we got clients in America. We do it. That's respect to you. You are you just a bloke that just keeps going, aren't
Speaker 1 00:15:32 You? It love
Speaker 0 00:15:32 Golf. I know, I know. But you really do as well. I, you know, should we change the time? It's like, no Joe, I really love doing them there. Yeah. And that is exactly what it is, isn't it? But that's a massive milestone as well. Is that a hundred? That's
Speaker 1 00:15:45 A hundred hours. And they're all recorded as well. They're all on the
Speaker 0 00:15:47 Yeah, they all in the library. All in the library. So people go, oh online. You know, I mean, to be honest, if there's somebody really good at what they do, it's much better to, you know, do a Zoom lesson and go with somebody that's not very good. I know the dog. Oh
Speaker 1 00:16:00 My God, come on. What she wants to get the, I would say they're 95% as good as being here in person. A hundred percent. We've, 'cause I do so many, I'm really skilled. I know I can help people tell 'em where to put the camera. I drag information out of them that tells me exactly what's happening to shop. Sometimes I can see them. Sometimes people have their own indoor venue. That makes life a whole lot easier. Some people do it on the driving range. We can see the bull fly. Some people don't wanna do either and wanna do it at home. Yeah. Almost sat in the chair. We can do that as well. So it's what works well.
Speaker 0 00:16:34 That's what one guy did that the other day, didn't he? One guy was just at home. He hadn't even got a club, but he just booked a session when he didn't need to talk about it. Which again, we can write a summary of, I just think, you know, YouTube has been highs and lows, hasn't it? It's been ups and downs, forwards and backwards and stuff. We are not giver up us. We're gonna go, okay, let's try and stay in the top 10% for another nine years.
Speaker 1 00:16:54 I just, I it's, it's work, but it's enjoyable work. Yeah. And we get to meet some tremendous people who come from watching our videos and Yeah. It's, it's a blessing. Yeah. Blessing. It is. It is a blessing and, and a pain in the ass sometimes.
Speaker 0 00:17:11 So here's a question. What would you like to see us do on YouTube? That's a really good question as
Speaker 1 00:17:15 Well. Yeah, definitely. Like a second we, we've got some ideas but yeah, it's good to hear yours. The
Speaker 0 00:17:19 Fun thing is that it always makes me laugh. Say if we go anywhere and you might recognize 'em off YouTube, like we go places don't we? They go, Ooh, hello, that's you off YouTube, isn't it? Now this is quite funny 'cause back in the day people used to recognize me. I used to have a career at the BBC. Right. The BBC like broadcasting company. Which is quite funny. So now it's you that's like, it's
Speaker 1 00:17:38 Yeah. Well you were on The Apprentice. Yeah,
Speaker 0 00:17:40 I was on The Apprentice and I did some BBC radio and broadcasting, which I love by the way. So yeah, more than that Please, that'd be great. But
Speaker 1 00:17:47 You had, I, oh I must share this story. We'll share this story. When we first met, we went out for a date. I says to you, you better be careful. As a lot of people know me, I didn't know she'd been on The Apprentice where she'd had eight, 9 million people, people watching her on time. I still to this, I didn't know anything about that.
Speaker 0 00:18:04 I still to this day, dunno what you actually said that, I dunno. That is a,
Speaker 1 00:18:08 I dunno why I said that
Speaker 0 00:18:09 Because he's a like, because he was a golf pro at the time. In 2013 he left. That's what he did to think. But yeah, you were a golf pro, weren't you at the golf course at Leamington then? I don't know. I mean, you know, lots of people do know you don't you If you're pro at the golf course, definitely. But I dunno actually why you said that. But I was laughing my head off because he said, yeah, you gotta be careful, you know, if we're gonna get together, a lot of people know me. I'm thinking haha, 8 million people. Well it was 8 million, seven, 8 million people that just watched me on national tv. Ha
Speaker 1 00:18:35 Ha. But the funny story was, Joe, we were sat in this bar and everybody kept looking at us. I says, so yeah I told you and a lot of people knew me. They were looking at you, not me humbled or what.
Speaker 0 00:18:49 That is quite funny. Yeah. May maybe that's the subject of another podcast is like we've done nine years on you YouTube just laughing to myself about, about the, 'cause he, he, he didn't know I'd been on Tell, which was quite fun. So yeah, people did use to stop me in the street and yeah, gimme hawks mostly. Well
Speaker 1 00:19:04 I think, I think in total we've had around about 10 million views of our channel, which is, it seems a lot but sometimes there's not a lot. You used to get there a week. I know
Speaker 0 00:19:15 I did. Used to
Speaker 1 00:19:17 Taking me nine years to me
Speaker 0 00:19:18 On YouTube.
Speaker 1 00:19:20 Do you know what? Don't
Speaker 0 00:19:21 Have a look.
Speaker 1 00:19:23 I teach, it's called Payback. No, don't.
Speaker 0 00:19:26 That's a long time ago. Right? It's nearly 20 years ago on
Speaker 1 00:19:28 My day. Things have changed. Don't look
Speaker 0 00:19:29 It anyway. You're throwing me now. Right. Okay. So just a little recap. I can't even remember what we're talking about now. Anyway, we're talking about nine years on YouTube. The highs and lows, the deletes, the edits, you know, the beautiful people that we met, the behind the scenes staff. You met the dog. I don't think there's anything else to say with you.
Speaker 1 00:19:46 No. Just, you know, and we, we are now celebrating our hundredth Zoom masterclass. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This, this coming week. So that's a bit been a massive milestone for us. Yeah. You know, again we're blessed. We've got members from all over the world. Yeah, they great. You join in on those. That's they,
Speaker 0 00:20:01 That's awesome. Yeah, they do. And then they get recorded, don't they? Which is really good.
Speaker 1 00:20:04 And ultimately it's all about making golfers a bit better. Yeah. Is it? You know, we have a great time. Which
Speaker 0 00:20:09 You are actually quite
Speaker 1 00:20:10 Do that. We do, we do. We do make golfers. But
Speaker 0 00:20:13 We did actually have somebody come in for an hour this session the other week and it actually dropped nine shots on his next
Speaker 1 00:20:18 Round in, in the next round of golf.
Speaker 0 00:20:19 Nine. Yeah. One hour and he dropped nine shots. Yeah. He didn't wanna do that anyway. Right. Sure. It's time to move on. It's time for you to go and have your breakfast, your tea or your dinner or whatever you do. Go play, hit some balls. Yeah. And if you're no good with purpose, if you're no good, drop us a line@propergolfing.com. We are easy to find. We're on social medias, Insta, YouTube, Spotify. So this podcast will be on Spotify. 'cause nobody likes really podcasts on YouTube. That's fine. We get that. The 400 people that watched it. Thanks very much. Anyway, so blown the way. We'll see you again next time. It's Joe and Junior for Proper Dog.
Speaker 1 00:20:54 Yeah. Take care guys. Alright, take
Speaker 0 00:20:56 Care. Bye bye. Bye.
