Speaker 0 00:00:01 Hi there and welcome to today's podcast with myself, Joe Cameron and Julian mek, brought to you from Proper Golfing hq.
Speaker 1 00:00:10 Love it. That's
Speaker 0 00:00:10 A lot. Love it. In the middle of Leafy Warwick Show in the uk, 10 minutes away from Royal Shakespeare country. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Got a lot of interesting things coming up on the show today. Not in any particular order, but we are concluding the chat on our videos on how to improve your drive-in, which is really good. So they're on YouTube accompanying this podcast and coming up with a weekend, obviously. Big stuff.
Speaker 1 00:00:38 Favorite week? Favorite week. Mostly s
Speaker 0 00:00:41 Weekend. You honestly, you like a little Tigger. All We
Speaker 1 00:00:44 Like a spoiled
Speaker 0 00:00:45 Child. When does a buildup start? I dunno. Ages ago,
Speaker 1 00:00:47 But, oh yeah, about a
Speaker 0 00:00:48 Week ago. Yeah. Honestly. So obviously couple, a lot of controversy and chit-chat to be held about the masters. So I'm gonna talk about that and a little bit of an update about what's going on here. Yeah, brilliant. Which is, we've got some lovely people coming through, aren't we? Yeah. But without further ado, cuz we know this is all about you and it's all about your golf. So yes, two videos on YouTube, part one and part two about improving driver power and accuracy. Yeah. When we try to summarize it, it's quite a lot in there.
Speaker 1 00:01:14 There is a lot in there Joe. And it's really important that people do it in a structured way. Yeah. So that if you, if you miss bits out, you won't improve. Yeah. Cause that element will be there. That's gonna cause a problem. So that's why we've done it in a really understandable
Speaker 0 00:01:28 Way. Do you know what, I've got a list, right? So we probably will work through the list, but there's loads, there's about ball position, there's about your body posture, there's about set up. All sorts of things isn't there? But there's some really, really good tips in there. You know, where our channel is all about these small changes that add up to massive results and they really do. I mean the good thing now is, cuz we've got our indoor simulator, you can see how Oh, fascinating. The It's amazing,
Speaker 1 00:01:54 Isn't it? The thing I love about it, Joe just gives factual information about what you're doing. There's no guesswork. Yeah. You know, you can stand on a range. It boils down a range. That was a great shot. Well was it, or was there a conversations in there? And I'm not saying we can't play golf for conversations. Of course we can. Yeah. But if you can minimize them and you can make some small improvements, they can make massive differences.
Speaker 0 00:02:17 So it's good for people that are obsessed with their golf. Like you like three bodies. Yeah. The other day I said, are you coming home for something to eat? And you were videoing yourself trying to get hold in one. I
Speaker 1 00:02:28 Was 50, goes 49 on the green. Not in. Oh I was good.
Speaker 0 00:02:35 When are you gonna start again then?
Speaker 1 00:02:36 About an hour
Speaker 0 00:02:38 Anyway. Right. The driver power and accuracy then. Yeah. Where we gonna start?
Speaker 1 00:02:45 You have to start from the start. You have to start from your setup. Yep. You know, I've gone through loads of different things in there. How to set up correctly. And it doesn't matter how long the driver is, some, some of 'em are physically longer than others. But getting the ball position right. The width, the stance, your weight distribution, your body angles. And it's quite simple to do once, you know, how
Speaker 0 00:03:05 Can you tell us the first step
Speaker 1 00:03:06 Then? So first step would be ball position. Yeah. Having that further forward in your stance, making sure the T is the right height as well.
Speaker 0 00:03:15 Because of this, what I learned was about the arc.
Speaker 1 00:03:17 Yeah. The golf swing is a, the golf swing is a big circle, basically on an angle. And generally the bottom of the circle is the, is in the middle of the body. So we want to be catching the golf ball as the, as the golf club is just starting to rise slightly because it's nicely upon a T. So having the ball further forward allows us to hit that golf ball in natural art.
Speaker 0 00:03:38 So more forward in this sense. Yeah. First tip, second thing that I learned as well is about the tea height. Yeah. How to do that. Really
Speaker 1 00:03:47 The top of
Speaker 0 00:03:47 The, I mean you may or may not know this, you know, our channel is for those people that have started golf or improving golf and stuff, sometimes you forget things. Sometimes a reminder that is a really good tip, I think. Yeah,
Speaker 1 00:03:58 It's, yeah, it's cuz if you get it wrong, if you tee too low with a driver, you end up with an out to end swing. You drive down on the ball and that puts too much spin on it. And that is not conducive to hitting really good tee shots. Having the ball too high gives you the possibility of hitting it off the top of the golf club ball. Shooting up in the air doesn't go very far. So about half a ball above the top, your club's a good guide and on on all your golf balls have got a name or these strikes that are on them. You can just do a quick measure. It's really simple to do. We did it with a closeup camera where you could really see what it was doing. And that, that really
Speaker 0 00:04:32 We're just reminding you, these two videos are on YouTube hit driver with power and ACC accuracy, part one and part two. That's right. The other thing that I thought was fascinating is the, the key thing that I always remember is arms, hips, knees, top, middle, bottom. So
Speaker 1 00:04:47 To get the posture
Speaker 0 00:04:47 A hundred percent I, yeah,
Speaker 1 00:04:49 How many middle? Get it wrong. So many people go top bottom and never do the middle bit. So the spine angles wrong. If the spine angle's wrong, the plane of the swings gonna be wrong. And then they're gonna be full following compensations again. So this is why you have to do it in this right order because it's like a shortcut to getting better. So much quicker.
Speaker 0 00:05:05 Yeah. Yeah. So it's arms, hips, hips, knees, knees. Okay. And if you're too far away, then just move slightly forward.
Speaker 1 00:05:12 You've gotta shuffle your feet. Don't just stretch your arms. It's the worst thing you can do.
Speaker 0 00:05:16 But what you've gotta do right, is don't wait until you're on the first tee. It's to practice these things, isn't it? You know? I mean you can even practice these in your garden, isn't it? Yeah. So you get yourself a nice little routine. Yeah. And then, you know, like mo, anybody that's successful at anything has what's called, well in engineering we used to call it standard operating procedure. Yeah, yeah. You know, like I'm an engineer, right? So I'm always on about processes. But if you've got yourself a little process, it might sound a bit dull, but if you follow it, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, however many points it is, it's there. It's works all the time. It's the same as like in the airline industry. Yeah. Yeah. So on an airline, they have procedures. I mean, they're taught over and over again how to deal with emergencies. But they still have a book because when you're under pressure, it all goes out the window. Follow it. Yeah. So don't leave it till the first tee. So go and practice on the range or you know, a lesson or do it at home, but get yourself a list. Have it on you, cover it on a bag tag, couldn't you? Or something like that.
Speaker 1 00:06:11 Whatever you on your head cover. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:06:13 On
Speaker 1 00:06:13 Your head cover. Yeah. So the thing that I get slightly annoyed with is I get a lot of comments on, on YouTube as, as we both know, and this personal goal, I, I tried your swing on the course today.
Speaker 0 00:06:25 Yeah. No,
Speaker 1 00:06:25 It's not the
Speaker 0 00:06:26 Place, it's not the place
Speaker 1 00:06:27 To try a golf swing. The best place to do it is to do it on a way you can, unless,
Speaker 0 00:06:33 Unless it's, you know, you go to try. Unless you know you, you're going to try. Which get rid of the word try. It's an experiment. Yeah. You know, if it's an experiment, that's fine. Go and have an experimental round and it, you know. But don't judge yourself on the outcomes of of one.
Speaker 1 00:06:46 No. But if you're trying this on the golf course, your chances are you're only gonna use a driver 14 times and you've not really practiced it. So you're not used to it. And then you go, ah, this doesn't work. Well, it won't work if you don't put a little bit of time and effort into it. There's a fabulous story I've heard this week. It comes from Trevor Immelman, who knows Tiger Woods very well. How long do you think Tiger Woods practiced? A six foot footfall?
Speaker 0 00:07:13 Oh, maybe days.
Speaker 1 00:07:14 Two days. Yeah, two days. I did that on a one six foot put. Okay. To discover what comes out of it. Yeah. Two days. So, you know, these, these elite golfers have time. Absolutely.
Speaker 0 00:07:25 They're gonna do two days, but, but more than once. I mean, my favorite thing, my favorite example of trying, which I used to use when I was teaching people to do stuff in life. Yeah, yeah. And I know you can't see this cause this is a, well, if you listen in audio, you can watch the videos, which are accompanied on the website as well. But if you put your arm out like that Yeah. Put your arm out. Right. And I say to people, try and lift it. Yeah. And they go, what do you mean? I go, well try and lift it. So they either lift it or they don't lift it. But you can't try. Yeah. Yeah. There's no such thing as try just lift. You either do or you don't. Yeah.
Speaker 1 00:07:55 Yeah. That makes total
Speaker 0 00:07:56 Sense. I'm not saying that you need to become your own word police, but just think about the word tried words important. You'd either doing it or not do it. They are important because they link it to your body, you know, your, your mind and your actions. Okay.
Speaker 1 00:08:07 So I remember a guy who came on one of the courses that we did. He says, I'm trying really, really, really hard to relax. You don't have to try to relax, you can.
Speaker 0 00:08:16 Oh. So learning, used learning or experiment or discover. Yeah. But try, try means like imagine if you're kicking a ball into a, into a goal, you're gonna, you might miss, try tell. You might miss. So just be aware of your language is what I'm saying. Yeah. So we've got, I think we've covered most of the things, aren't we? And then coming into the swing itself.
Speaker 1 00:08:40 So moving is, you should learn to do the body movement before you put the arms onto the body movement. So practice the body movement that I've shown in the videos. Cause that's super important. It just talks about how to move your body, how to turn your shoulders, how to spiral your body up properly, get your weight, transferring. Good balance, good rhythm. So those things are super important. But practice those independent.
Speaker 0 00:09:04 Because you talked about like a spring or a, not a spo.
Speaker 1 00:09:08 Was that a spiral stage? A spiral case for almost really. But yeah, we need to spiral the body up and down and
Speaker 0 00:09:13 Around. Not this, we don't want tilting,
Speaker 1 00:09:15 Stretching and, and swaying.
Speaker 0 00:09:18 Swaying, swaying is a thing that we see a lot of, isn't it
Speaker 1 00:09:20 Swaying? Yeah. And then put the arms on top of that. So we talk a lot about the 45 degree angle that's created naturally at address and trying to replicate that. So changing the path of the golf club too much can cause loads of issues. So, but what, just simplifying it again,
Speaker 0 00:09:35 What I liked about the video is the fact that you say you practice these movements quite a lot. Okay? You do. We're not expecting you to be able to move as well as you do. Okay. Yeah. But what we're expecting is to see a little bit of progress, aren't we? Over a period of time. You know, if you do that, if you do those movements like 10, 5,000 times a day, you're gonna get better, aren't you? Yeah. But you know, it's not to just stop when you think you, you know, it's like you, you've gotta stretch yourself, aren't you? If you wanna get better, you've gotta stretch yourself. I mean physically and mentally.
Speaker 1 00:10:05 Well the the cool thing about the body movement for instance, that you could do 50 turns in a, in two minutes. It's all, it takes two minutes. Yeah. So it's not like, oh I've gotta spend days doing this. You can do it in literally minutes and then you're getting the habit of doing that movement. So it's not like, oh my god, I've gotta go and practice forever. Now you do it at home, you do it while you're waiting for the kettle Boys
Speaker 0 00:10:29 Can I, can I just suggest to you at home that if you wanna improve your movement, you have to like learn to stretch without hurting yourself. Okay. So when we're talking about stretch, when you get to a point where you feel like you're stretching your body, you know, if you're doing some flexibility exercises Yeah. You stretch and then you breathe through it. It's not about forcing your body into positions. Yeah. It's about stretch and breathing. So we don't want anybody injuring themselves. No. But you know, sometimes we'll stop, we'll think, oh, because we get older we lose a bit of flexibility, don't we?
Speaker 1 00:11:01 So yeah. Mobility. Yeah, definitely. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And speed. We lose a little bit of speed, which
Speaker 0 00:11:05 Is, that's all right as well. Cause you proved that you can still it a ball light.
Speaker 1 00:11:08 Wow. There was a great tip at the end, wasn't there? Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:11:10 Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 00:11:12 A little experiment. No, do you
Speaker 0 00:11:13 Know what? You gotta stay till the end.
Speaker 1 00:11:15 Yeah,
Speaker 0 00:11:16 We'll say to the end. Cuz that was really, really good. And I know on the video when you see it, it is properly at the end. And you know, there is no gimmick in trying to get, because we listened to the end of like, oh my god, you've gotta stay for the embi because that was really good. So anyway it did. We're teasing you now. We're not teasing you now. So masters. So I think we've concluded all that, aren't we? There's a lot more in video but masters. Right. Okay. So what's exciting about that then?
Speaker 1 00:11:40 It's like, it's like the beginning of the season really for the masters. So it's an elite venue. We all know that. It's just get gets everybody in the mood for playing golf again for the season. And in my opinion, I think it's one of the best tournaments that we could play. Yeah. I
Speaker 0 00:11:59 Love it. So there's some controversy,
Speaker 1 00:12:02 A little,
Speaker 0 00:12:02 A little bit, just some famous people playing that are seemingly having reflective mode like Tiger Woods stuck in bit reflective
Speaker 1 00:12:10 Change. So it's not the aggressive Tiger Woods who's gonna win everything. He's definitely a bit more reflective talking about stories from the masters, which never really heard him talk about that. I think he's come to the conclusion that his body is not allowing him to do what his mind would want him to do. And you know, his put his body through a lot as needed. Obviously a terrible car crash and stuff like that. I
Speaker 0 00:12:34 Just feel pain. Do you know, like when you see him walking sometimes you get it looks painful. Of course. Yeah. It makes me feel like I wanna win. So that's interesting the way he's viewing it. Yeah. And then raw reason added his opinion as I need to,
Speaker 1 00:12:46 He I his opinion to live. And he's basically told, told people, just leave it be for this. Just let it go. Stop the politics. This is about the masters and winning a major. And I thought, yeah, that's nice. That's a refreshing attitude. Cuz you know, cam Smith was doing an interview yesterday and he was really pleased that people were talking to him and shaking his hand and, and and what, what was really interesting Joe, is he said, I've missed some of these people. Oh. Which I thought, oh, hang on a minute. Hang on. Is there, is there a bit of a softening going on? Yeah, because at the end of the day, they're all best. You know, they're all, they
Speaker 0 00:13:24 Spend a lot of time with each
Speaker 1 00:13:25 Time in each other's company and, and they, you know, they admire each other's skills and it's just a shame the way that it's all been dealt with. I don't know what the answer is, but I'd like to think there's a, a solution where everybody can come together somehow. Don't quite know what that is. Yes. The authorities of this world might, might have the answer.
Speaker 0 00:13:45 Can I ask you who you do top who, who think it's gonna be,
Speaker 1 00:13:48 Who do I think is gonna win? I think my first one, Scotty Scheffler playing. Fabulous. Okay. Rory is due to when he's phenomenal. Yes. Probably one of the most gifted golfers I've seen. If he got tiger's brain, oh my god. God knows what would've happened.
Speaker 0 00:14:06 What you mean is resilience, you mean? Or is
Speaker 1 00:14:08 Yeah, I just think, I dunno, Tiger's just unique end off. Yeah. Just unique. I don't really know anybody like him.
Speaker 0 00:14:15 He has, he has, he has,
Speaker 1 00:14:17 He's mellowed
Speaker 0 00:14:17 A little bit. Well no, he's, he's he's given away a lot as well. A lot. I do not, I don't do you know what I'm saying? In line he's not Yes. In terms of his rounded human being nature, do
Speaker 1 00:14:26 You know? Yeah, totally agree. So Rory is going to win one. It's just when win Zander Shuffler Shuffle shuffle, he's always really good around there. He, I don't think he'll be a million miles off and wouldn't surprise me if Brooks or Smith come to the forefront and do very well as well. So at the end of the day, they're all brilliant. Golf
Speaker 0 00:14:55 Playing be a complete surprise.
Speaker 1 00:14:57 Yeah. I, who, who doesn't love a surprise.
Speaker 0 00:15:01 Yeah, I know. And you so Reese Easter weekend as well. So it's, yeah. You know, I'll just realized in our house, you remember I was one, we'd talk about the masters in our house. We always remember my mom coming around and doing the ironing right in front of the tally when our little, oh my God. And because it's Easter Sunday, she said, are you inviting us over for tea on Sunday? Oh my goodness. Me. No, I said, I did say no, thank God. But I could have So
Speaker 1 00:15:24 I don't mean that mother-in-law. No, that
Speaker 0 00:15:27 Could, that could have didn't like being,
Speaker 1 00:15:30 Like being indulgent watching you
Speaker 0 00:15:31 Come in here to watch it
Speaker 1 00:15:32 In here. I, I would do, if you comes over I'll put it on the big screen.
Speaker 0 00:15:37 Yeah. Boys and their man caves. Yeah. Yeah. I mean you could couldn't you really? Very easy.
Speaker 1 00:15:41 Yeah. You
Speaker 0 00:15:41 Could come watch it on the big screen. So anyway, I wonder what Yeah, let's just wait and see what happens on Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 00:15:47 That's the, that's the fun of it. And do
Speaker 0 00:15:49 You know the, we had our friend Matt over from America, didn't we? One of our proper golfing members. Yeah. His son was in London. So he came up for a couple of our lessons and I totally enjoyed giving him the, the tour of Royal Lemington's Spa and Warwickshire Castle. That was fantastic. Yeah. But he's there,
Speaker 1 00:16:07 He's, he's
Speaker 0 00:16:08 Focus. But he did say he is, he's wear cup golf in hats,
Speaker 1 00:16:12 Didn't he? Slightly jealous Matt, that you are doing that.
Speaker 0 00:16:15 We all sent him with a hat.
Speaker 1 00:16:17 Yeah. So one day, one day somebody's gonna send me an invite, said, would you be my guest to the Masters? Yes. No. Well, whoa, whoa. No I
Speaker 0 00:16:24 Will be. No but you said me.
Speaker 1 00:16:26 Yeah, I did say me. Yeah, I
Speaker 0 00:16:27 Did. You mean not me?
Speaker 1 00:16:28 Well hopefully there's an invite for all of us, whatever. But if it was just one invite, then I'd, that's not
Speaker 0 00:16:34 Even slightly funny. I used to like you anyway. If anybody wants to invite me, I'll go. Yeah,
Speaker 1 00:16:41 You can't invite. Absolutely. That'd be hilarious for,
Speaker 0 00:16:43 Yeah. So you haven't even thought about
Speaker 1 00:16:44 That. That'd be one up. I deserve that.
Speaker 0 00:16:48 Anyway. Yeah, so it's been a fun time here, hasn't it? Now we've been open two months. Royal Lemington spars a beautiful place to be. Yeah, we're based on a rural arrangement aren't we as well? So we can just see some rural countryside out there, which is, so yeah, it's been a busy few weeks, isn't it? Planning to do these Podcasts more regularly? Cause we've just been basically flat out. So if you need to get a hold of us, you can send Julian an email, Julian a proper golfing.com or I'm joe proper golfing.com. That's it. You know, if you've got any ideas podcast or you wanna questions or anything, please send them in. So here's the tip where just before we conclude that tip, which I absolutely love, that was at the end of the, I think it's at the part the
Speaker 1 00:17:32 Second, the part two.
Speaker 0 00:17:33 Yeah. Yeah. Go on. Do it. Cause it gained how many HDRs? I think I'll think
Speaker 1 00:17:36 About. I gained, it wasn't yards, it was speed. Speed. So speed's important in the golf swing. And I gained eight mile an hour by making one change.
Speaker 0 00:17:45 Eight mile,
Speaker 1 00:17:46 What
Speaker 0 00:17:47 Was it? Tellerson? I know what it was.
Speaker 1 00:17:49 Grip light, not tight. Grip
Speaker 0 00:17:52 Light. Not tight. Tight. Yes.
Speaker 1 00:17:54 That's so good curve. You know, you know that habit that women have when you say something and they hit you? So they've got just natural speed. Okay. But instead of it all being forced, they've got that natural speed. A flick, a little flick, it's like flick don't do. And he's like, that's smart. As a little bit. Okay. So I think ladies have that quite naturally. Oh okay. But if you can apply it to your golf swing. So the way to do it is feel massive tension. Yeah. Hold it for a second and then let it go. Feel at ease. Yeah. Your muscles move faster, the club moves quicker and you're gonna hit the golf ball further. The other thing that was very noticeable is how straight it went.
Speaker 0 00:18:35 It was
Speaker 1 00:18:36 Fantastic. It absolutely went
Speaker 0 00:18:37 Straight down line just by dripping it light. Not tight. How good is that light? Not tight. So there's, that's the only thing you remember from this podcast. Yeah. It should gain you some extra club speed, which obviously send the ball a bit further.
Speaker 1 00:18:48 Yeah. And, and it feels better on the body. Yeah. So
Speaker 0 00:18:50 It's, that's alright. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. So thank you for listening to our podcast today. There's more on the YouTube channel, more on the website, proper golfing.com or proper golfing sim, which is here based on the uk. So you can watch or listen and send us some messages. Stay in touch on our Facebook page as well. Yeah.
Speaker 1 00:19:08 Just a quick reminder, Joe, that we're gonna do some one and two day
Speaker 0 00:19:11 Courses. Yes, yes. Yeah. One
Speaker 1 00:19:12 Or two day courses and we're looking at some coaching holidays abroad. Yes. Which
Speaker 0 00:19:16 Would be really nice. Yeah, I've been looking at those this week. So Portugal, potentially Portugal, which is great in October. Yeah. And some one and two day courses here in beautiful countryside. Yeah. Yeah. So might have
Speaker 1 00:19:28 A very special venue not I
Speaker 0 00:19:29 Know. So if you're interested in any of those droppers of line. But that's all for today. Thank you for listening and we'll see you again soon.
Speaker 1 00:19:36 Yeah. Take care.
Speaker 0 00:19:37 Bye. Bye.
