Speaker 0 00:00:00 Hi there and welcome to the Proper Golfing podcast with myself, Joe Cameron

Speaker 1 00:00:03 And Julie Miller. Yeah,

Speaker 0 00:00:05 Hi. I hope you're well. Hi. So today is the third in our series from the Transformation Vault here at Proper Golfing. And the title of today's podcast is the Driver Slice that disappeared in 12 minutes. So if that's you, if you're slicing it, then that's you listen up. But basically it's, but Mark, he's a real person that come from real coaching. Absolutely. And good player, mature player, intelligent fit. But I like this, I don't like this in the same breath, but his driver had become a liability. His driver was li liability. I know we do get that a lot, don't we? So if your driver is a liability then here goes, but he'd been told like most people to swing more from the inside, keep your head still hold the club face square. Yeah. And rotate harder through the ball. So we've been told of those things haven't he?

Speaker 1 00:00:55 Yeah. And train himself to do it really well.

Speaker 0 00:00:57 I mean trained himself to be,

Speaker 1 00:00:58 Which made him hit it very right. Very

Speaker 0 00:01:01 Right. Okay, so here's the nu, these are actual figures. I'll tell you this every time. These is real people, real data. That's why it's all on the sheet because this is from our real transformation vault. All the data that he records of hundreds of lessons over the last month. So I'll tell you that every time. I'm just reminding you because the numbers are here. So yeah, tell us what his numbers actually said.

Speaker 1 00:01:19 So he's, we looked at his club path and that was one between one and two degrees out to in, which is a minor number is club face. Now that wasn't issue 28 to 35 degrees open consistently. Its impact. So if your club face is pointing right, that golf ball's going off to the right, no question about it. Grip pressure was really high, probably eight out of 10 because he was trying to hold the club face square tightened up, definitely held on big time with his left hand even though he is right hand dominant. And that was actually leaving the club face open. Incredible and release non-existent. Okay. Didn't release a club head at all because he trained himself not to with the way he'd been taught before.

Speaker 0 00:02:02 It's crazy enough. So for the people that don't really know, just so those numbers like the club face club, sorry, I've got a bit of a cold club pass and the face on roll. So tell people roughly where that

Speaker 1 00:02:12 Should be happening. So sh shot shapes come from, let's simplify it to two things. There's actually, depends where you hit it on the club face depends on the angle of attack, but two things that really define shot shape is swing path. So out to in into out or online and club face. So if your club face is left, your swing is left, that ball's going left. So kind of what what we looked at was, was club path wasn't really the issue. Releasing the club massively was the issue. But then we had to dig a little bit deeper and, and and understand why he was holding the club face open. And that went back to his previous lessons when, when he was taught to play golf. So it was the first thing that I know is an issue when people don't release a a golf club, they're holding the club too tight commonly with their lead hand.

Speaker 1 00:03:04 With their left hand. Even though some people are left-handed and play right-handed. Quite a lot of right-handed golfers who are right-handed anyway do become dominant with their left hand. So that grip pressure was really tight. So the first thing we've got to do is ease that off. And we did that in a couple of ways. We got him to do the breathing. We also got him to grip it really tight for two seconds and ease that off a little bit. And we eventually got him down to about five. Now I say eventually three minutes. Oh okay, cool. Something like that. Yeah. So it didn't actually take that long. The first thing he could feel, which he hadn't felt for such a long time was the club head. Ah right, okay. Which sounds so simple, doesn't it? But suddenly you could feel the club was swinging freer 'cause he's got

Speaker 0 00:03:50 Less tension in his grade, less tension. So you can actually feel, oh okay.

Speaker 1 00:03:52 Yeah. And I like to do a little exercise sometimes when I get people told it really tight and see if they can swing the club and then we ease it off and ease it off and suddenly the club starts swinging. So hence you can start to release a club. So tension was the first thing. It was, what was fascinating for him as well was he actually started to understand why the golf ball was going right and it was a club face issue. So caused mainly by grip pressure. But then I had to teach him how to release the club 'cause he trained himself to try and keep his club face square through impact. Now what happens, remember the, the golf swing is on an arc and if you are trying to keep the club face two square to target, technically it's actually open to the swing path that you're on.

Speaker 1 00:04:37 So that is the one of the major issues that he got when he was leaking the ball out to the right. So got him to set up really well hands down and not too far forward. 'cause again, that was encouraging him to hold the face open. Then we did some little one-handed right hand swings. So I got him to hold it where his right hand would be normally and just tap a few shots. Now on the screen behind us, there's, there's a line. It's actually going towards the heel tower. There's a little line and what I got him to do is actually make the ball finish left of the line. I didn't care how far left it went, as long as it went left. And at first he didn't do it 'cause he, 'cause he was really good at holding the face open and then just with one hand he suddenly felt a freedom in his golf swing.

Speaker 1 00:05:25 So he started to release the club better. And then he, and and I said, I don't care if you overdo it. And he did that a few times, he went, oh that's, that's a bit scary. But what it did is, is there's nothing wrong with the learning through failure. Now he, he thought he was failing because he was hitting the two far left. But that's what I was asking him to do so that he could understand how to release the club. And then we got him to match it up and, and start to square the face up a little bit more. I think at that point he needed a drink,

Speaker 0 00:05:57 He needed a rest. I just wanna say though, you know people that have been following you for a while you know are Julie, aren't you getting too technical Julian? The reason why we got the data is to aim towards the three principles of the timeless golf swing. Absolutely. Methodology. Okay. That's our Bible. That's our methodology. That's what we stick to, isn't it? So we're always aiming for a free flowing motion. Yeah. Coordinated movement and a six second finish. So it's always going in the same direction. And that's what we getting the data for. It's not to make it more complicated, it's to how you get towards that.

Speaker 1 00:06:28 Well is that an understanding? Yeah. Now when you, when you actually know how far your club faces to the right and then you gradually start to to release it better and you see the numbers come down, getting it into low single figures was amazing for him. 'cause he instantly started to gain yardage because his club face was much squarer and at the end I think we gained, what was it for? Yeah, so he was, you know, quite an athletic guy but it was a really weak shot that he was hitting going between one 50 and one 70 on average. Jumped up to over one 90 within minutes. Yeah, probably so Cool. Five minutes, six minutes. 'cause not only was he scoring the club face up, he was actually accelerating the club face as well because it's moving quicker. And I think we got quite a few of them over. Yes. Over the, over the 200 mark in no time at all. So he was really surprised he could do it. It's just that he'd been influenced if I, if I was to call it that, to hold that club face square to target. But he was actually holding it open to target. The, the final thing that we got him to work on was finish.

Speaker 0 00:07:37 Yeah. So the signature six second finish

Speaker 1 00:07:40 The signature six second finish. Now what I did is I got him to finish in the correct place where I lit really like to see wait on the lead foot facing target clubs flowing over the shoulder, shoulders are down and relaxed. But then I got him to hold his finish when he was doing it wrong and we could see the left shoulder was really high, the face was open and the club never really got over his shoulder. So as soon as we started to relax the shoulder, the left shoulder down the club could flow over into the finish. Then he knew what the right finish felt like and lo and behold he could get there. Yeah. Wow. And that, that's when kind of the magic started to happen. And I think it was, was it 12, 13 minutes? It wasn't very long. I know. Which was exciting. Amazing. Really exciting for me. I wasn't surprised.

Speaker 0 00:08:29 No, a hundred percent because

Speaker 1 00:08:30 You know, he was fit, he was athletic, he knew he, he was, he's dare we say he is an athlete, he knew how to move. He'd just trained himself outta doing it. So it was just a matter of a allowing his body to move more efficiently. Now does that sound familiar to you who are listening to this podcast? The ones who are hitting that golf ball off the right trying harder trying,

Speaker 0 00:08:53 Trying harder. That's my least favorite word isn't it? Try and

Speaker 1 00:08:55 Try and find, yeah, hitting it harder and it's getting worse and the more, more it went to the right more you aim left and the more you aim left, the more it went to the right. So on and so forth.

Speaker 0 00:09:04 Trying's hard work. It's hard work but you, what we are gonna, so if you're listening and not watching, that's great. Are podcasts are recorded and we'll be on Spotify. As you know we're not about hints and tips and tricks and all that sort of stuff. Like most YouTubers we're on Spotify where you can get real data, real information, real mature chats about your golf basically. Yeah, exactly. So now you're gonna tell, I tell

Speaker 1 00:09:29 You what they can

Speaker 0 00:09:29 Do. Yeah, what you can do. So Julian, the actual things, yeah, I'm sound like I'm repeating myself again and I but the actual things from the actual data.

Speaker 1 00:09:37 So what could you do today? Yeah, yeah. First thing you must do is, is check your grip pressure because if it is tight you won't be releasing the club. I'll guarantee it. So experiment, if you go and go, let's say you go and hit 10 balls, 20 balls, 50 balls, the first two or three grip it really tight, the next two or three reduce that a little bit. The next two or three reduce it a little bit more and don't be afraid to go to the point where it feels too loose because you don't actually know what happens, what's on the other side of being too relaxed. You could be too relaxed, we don't know that. But as as a marker in the sand, five outta 10 absolutely maximum. So that's the first thing you should do.

Speaker 0 00:10:17 I was also gonna say that we recommend so we can, you know 'cause we don't know you personally yet. We are recommending that if you want to know personally what's gonna work for you when you join the proper golfing online membership, it's 9 99 pounds or $13 a month. That's it. When you join we ask you about your golf, you send us whatever you wanna tell us about your golf. It could be your rounds, your emotion, your body, your technique, anything you tell us what you want and then we him send your personal him fellow will send your personalized response. Yeah. So for 30 days you know what to work on and what it's gonna benefit for you. Yeah. And the really exciting thing is it points you to the right content in our digital library. You know, if you're in the golfing world, you know that everybody's got digital libraries and we are gonna point you to the actual videos and the actual information that you need to improve your golf. Yeah, okay. It's important that I say that, that you can get, so that's, it's a no brainer. So that's first thing Yeah. That you're gonna tell them. And then you've got two more things. So

Speaker 1 00:11:20 Club head release. So definitely gets, it doesn't really matter what club you use, maybe an iron to start off with. Pick a target in the distance. This is if you're hitting the ball off to the right. Okay. Pick that target and make sure your ball finishes left of the target. But try not to do it by swinging to the left. Try to do it by turning the club face a little bit more than you've been used to. So what we would call releasing the club. So if you're just watching, you know if, if you're listening the right hand's going to turn more to the left. But if you are watching, we're just real, almost trying to shake somebody's hand on the follow through side. Yeah. What I don't want to do, Joe, I don't want to give you five. No I want to shake your hand over here.

Speaker 1 00:12:06 Yeah. Because if you imagine the palm of your right hand is an extension of the club face and if that's starting to release and turn to the left, the club face will be doing the same thing. If I give you five on the follow through, that club face is gonna come in open, you're leaking that shot out to Right. So not only do you, you end up kind of swinging a little bit harder when you open it, you're also adding loft to the club face. It goes very high and it'll go to right and you're gonna lose distance. So when you learn to release it and definitely just do it with the right hand at first on its own and, and don't try and hit full shots. I mean you can if you're a talented golfer, but don't try and hit miracle shots. Just learn what your club face is doing and if you can't do it, you know, we can definitely help you do that one. And then that's our s to six second finish. You know, hit a shot, hold your finish and try and figure out where you are. See if you've got too much tension. Generally in your left shoulder. I think we've got a percentage, Joe, 73% of of the people that we've coached who've got tight left shoulder hit the ball to the right. Ah, that's so credible. 73%. I mean that's, that's insane

Speaker 0 00:13:13 They, that

Speaker 1 00:13:14 We collect and crazy. You know, this is just loads of things collected that we know is factually correct because we see it and we use the numbers to, to back up what what we're saying. So we don't like to confuse people with numbers, but they're really important 'cause it helps learning. Yeah. You know, which, which is part of it also, where are you facing, you know, you might be facing off to the right so you haven't turned through properly, which again will affect the release. Where's your weight? Where's your right knee pointing? Now that should be pointing at Target. It shouldn't be your right foot shouldn't stay flat on the floor. You should be up facing your target. So think about the finish, think about the release, think about that grip tension and failing that. Make sure you know when you, when you join, make sure you fill in the form. Tell us all about your golf and let's send that 30 day plan to you. 'cause it works

Speaker 0 00:14:03 A hundred percent that

Speaker 1 00:14:03 That's the top and bottom of it. Yeah,

Speaker 0 00:14:04 I'm excited. Really. I'm excited to just listen about what

Speaker 1 00:14:08 You're I love it. I love it Joe. You know that I, you know, I know, I know. Mark's over. I'm really excited.

Speaker 0 00:14:14 Everybody's over the moon, aren't they? Yeah. But anyway, we hope you enjoy our little weekly podcast. As I say, I'm Joe Cameron. He's doing Miller. The website address is proper golfing.com. You can join, as I say, for 9 99 or $13 and get your free 30 day plan. Why wouldn't you? Really? Yeah, why

Speaker 1 00:14:30 Wouldn't you?

Speaker 0 00:14:31 Yeah, I know we are busy 'cause you've gotta go, we're doing a group coaching call tonight, which members also get access to so you can ask him direct questions. Yeah. So we're gonna go now. Yeah. Thanks for listening anyway, and we'll see you again next week.
